As Maharashtra downed the shutters of its multiplexes amid a second wave of the pandemic, it’s not just the latter who will feel the pain. Hindi movie aficionados across the nation will also be at a loss as movie producers are delaying new releases. Several movie producers have postponed the release dates of films after the state shut down multiplexes till April end amid skyrocketing Covid-19 cases across the state, according to an ET report.Analysts say the move will significantly impact the business despite Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Bengal allowing 100% occupancyA delay in the release of Hindi films will impact the entire film industry as the former form almost 50% of the box office. Night curfews and weekend lockdowns in some cities have caused a significant drop in those regions.The release of major upcoming Hindi movies like ‘Sooryavanshi’ and ‘Bunty Aur Bubly 2’ has been postponed in Hindi-speaking states, Shaaminder Malik, Delhi and NCR based independent film distributor told ET.The occupancy of many theatres is down to 5-10% while many others are contemplating closing down temporarily. South Indian movies have managed to pull crowds in their local markets to ward off the overall slump.Maharasthra once again emerged as the worst-affected state in the second wave of the pandemic. The state ordered its cinema halls, theatres and multiplexes shut for public access in the first week of April 2021 in order to limit public gatherings. The state also imposed a weekend lockdown from 8 pm to 7 am starting April 5.
