New Delhi: After staging nationwide protests against fuel hike, Congress on Friday demanded a complete rollback of excise duty on fuel brought by the Modi government during the last seven years. The party also iterated that petrol and diesel must be brought under the ambit of Goods and Services Tax (GST).The grand old party issued a statement which read, "Indian National Congress demands complete rollback of excise duty hike brought by Modi govt on petrol and diesel during the last seven years. The benefit of reduced international crude oil prices should be passed on to the people and the rates of petrol-diesel be reduced accordingly.""Petrol and diesel should be brought under the GST," said Congress after the party's nationwide protest today against the rise in fuel prices.Congress also took to its official Twitter handle and launched a blistering attack at the Central government over the rising prices of petrol and diesel.महंगाई, बेरोजगारी, महामारी की मार झेल रही देश की जनता पर मोदी सरकार लगातार प्रहार करती जा रही है। सरकार को हर हाल में महंगाई पर विराम लगाकर पेट्रोल-डीजल के नाम पर हो रही सरकारी लूट को बंद करनी चाहिए।#BJPLootingIndia pic.twitter.com/NiUxenbNebEarlier in the day, Congress held nationwide protests in view of the rising prices of petrol and diesel. Congress leaders along with party workers demonstrated across the country holding placards and raising slogans against the central government.With Congress protesting against the high fuel prices in the country, the BJP hit back saying the states where the opposition party is in power should slash the VAT (value-added tax) on the petrol and diesel prices to provide relief to people.Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Rajasthan, which is ruled by the Congress, is among the states with the highest VAT on fuel prices, noting that it is 26 per cent on diesel compared to 20.2 per cent in Gujarat and 36 per cent on petrol compared to 16.6 per cent in Haryana.
