Meet Payal Patel: The AAP member who became the youngest corporator of Surat in Gujarat
Gandhinagar: Payal Patel, the 22-year-old model and actor by profession, on Tuesday registered an emphatic win in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader has now become the youngest corporator of Ward 16 in Surat, Gujarat.Patel, the final year B Com student from Amreli, defeated her Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival in Ward 16, Poorna (West) region by a margin of more than 12,000 votes.After her thumping victory, Patel said that it does not matter whether she is in the power or in opposition as she just wants to serve the people."I have no words to express myself. Of course, I was confident about winning, but not with such a huge margin, especially when we were fighting against a sitting corporator," Patel told news agency IANS.Payal Patel is an actress and has acted in a Gujarati film, 'Taari Maari Dosti'. She has also featured in over 50 songs, some of them Gujarati hit remixes like, 'Maiyer Ma Manadu Nathi Mantu'."We were in constant touch with the people of my ward for the past six months and I practically know each and everybody in my ward. We have so many issues like narrow roads, open gutters, no government school, among others. My first priority is to do something about the open gutters," said Patel."I don't think that it makes a difference whether I am in the ruling party or in the opposition. I firmly believe that if one wants to serve the public, even while in the opposition, one can make a difference," she added.The BJP has registered spectacular victory in elections to six municipal corporations - Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar - in Gujarat.As far as the AAP is concerned, the party had contested civic body elections in Gujarat for the first time.Led by Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP won 27 out of 120 seats in the SMC. While the remaining seats were grabbed by the BJP, Congress failed to win even a single seat. Notably, Congress had won 36 seats in SMC last time.The AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will hold a roadshow in Surat on Friday to thank the voters."The people of Gujarat wanted an alternative and AAP has emerged as the key alternative to the present parties. Now the upcoming Assembly Election will be only between the AAP and the BJP," Kejriwal had said on Tuesday.
