Citroen C5 Aircross vs Jeep Compass: Which SUV should you buy?
Citroen recently entered the Indian automobile market with C5 Aircross that starts from ₹29.9 lakh for the entry-level Feel variant while the top-end Shine variant gets a price tag of ₹31.9 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. Clearly, the C5 Aircross is an expensive vehicle considering that it's a compact SUV. However, the French carmaker claims that the C5 Aircross offers a riding experience like no other SUV in the segment. That's primarily because of the progressive hydraulic suspension that promises a supple ride quality. To make its first SUV a success in the market, Citroen has equipped it with a plethora of modern gadgetry and safety features. Now, the C5 is a rival to the likes of Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen T-Roc, and the new Jeep Compass that was launched earlier this year and boasts of better gadgetry than the predecessor. Now, if you were planning to buy the new Jeep Compass but are confused because of C5 Aircross' entry, here's something to make an informed decision. The C5 Aircross is 4,500 mm long, 2,099 mm wide, 1,710 mm tall, and has a 2,730 mm-long wheelbase. Jeep Compass, on the other hand, measures 4,405 mm in length, 1,818 mm in width, 1,640 mm in height, and has a 2,636 mm-long wheelbase. And as for the boot space, the C5 Aircross offers segment-best luggage space of 580-litres while the Compass has 438-litres of luggage space. These figures tell us that the C5 Aircross is wider, longer, and taller than the Compass. The French SUV also has a longer wheelbase and a significantly more spacious boot space than the Compass. Citroen C5 Aircross comes with equipment like an eight-inch touchscreen system, smartphone connectivity, a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, Air Quality System (AQS) cabin air filter, panoramic sunroof, independently adjustable rear seats, hands-free tailgate, alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, rear AC vents, dual-zone climate control system, ambient lighting, two driving modes, etc. Jeep Compass' feature list includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen system with UConnect system for smartphone connectivity, a 10.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, wireless charging, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, semi-digital instrument panel, dual-zone automatic AC, ventilated front seats, rear AC vents, cruise control, push-button engine start, 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat, cruise control, etc. The C5 Aircross comes with safety features like front, front-side, and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, park assist, fatigue alarm, blind-spot monitoring system, hill start assist, traction control, hill descent control, reversing camera, electric parking brake, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors, etc. Jeep Compass, on the other hand, safety provisions like six airbags, traction control system, electronic stability control, ABS, EBD, hill start assist, all four disc brakes, electronic roll mitigation programme, electronic parking brake, reverse parking camera, 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, etc. To take on the uncharted terrains, the SUV gets Grip Control system with five dedicated terrain modes -- Standard, Snow, All-terrain, Sand, and Traction control off. The SUV also gets Citroen Advanced Comfort suspension with progressive hydraulic cushions that offer a comfortable ride even over the rough surfaces. The Jeep Compass, however, is more suitable for off-roading, thanks to the 4X4 system, DST (dynamic steering torque), frequency selective damping suspension, and Selec-Terrain with Snow, Mud, Sport, and Auto terrain modes. Citroen C5 Aircross is propelled by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that puts out 176 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. This powerplant is paired to an EAT8 eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Jeep Compass, on the other hand, is available with a petrol and a diesel engine. The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine makes 161 bhp and 250 Nm. This powerplant is available with a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox and seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. Jeep Compass diesel uses a 2.0-litre unit that churns 168 bhp and 350 Nm. This engine can be paired to a six-speed manual gearbox while buyers can also opt for a nine-speed automatic transmission. These figures reveal that Citroen C5 Aircross diesel is more powerful than Jeep Compass diesel. However, the C5 misses out on a petrol engine which could turn some buyers towards the Compass. The C5 Aircross will set you back by ₹29.9 lakh for the entry-level Feel variant while the top-end Shine variant gets a price tag of ₹31.9 lakh. Jeep Compass, on the other hand, is significantly cheaper than the C5 Aircross. The Compass petrol starts from ₹16.99 lakh and goes all the way to ₹25.29 lakh. Jeep Compass diesel's prices, however, range between ₹18.69 lakh and ₹28.29 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.
