Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has put coronavirus to a positive test. Bolsonaro announced his diagnosis to the country in a television interview.
According to a statement from the presidency, Jair Bolsonaro took the test on Monday evening, adding the result would return Tuesday. Local media confirmed he had coronavirus symptoms, such as a fever.
"I came from the hospital," Bolsonaro told supporters in comments broadcast by a pro-government YouTube channel after getting out of his car Monday evening. "But everything is perfect," he said.
Bolsonaro said he had been subjected to a lung scan which showed them to be "clean."
The president's Tuesday public agenda showed an empty morning schedule, with no meetings until 3 p.m. Local media confirmed his diary was cleared while he was awaiting the outcome.
The nationalist leader has repeatedly ignored local rules to wear a mask in public, even after he was directed by a judge at the end of June to do so. Bolsonaro has also railed against World Health Organization-backed social distancing laws.
Brazil has the second-largest epidemic in the world behind the US. Covid-19 murdered more than 65,000 people in Latin America's largest country.
