Biplab Deb says ‘ethically’ Mamata Banerjee should not become West Bengal CM after Nandigram defeat
Agartala: Mamata Banerjee’s Nandigram defeat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections might have given her primary opposition the Bharatiya Janata Party a consolation price, but the Trinamool Congress supremo won more than what she lost in her home turf. Her defeat was nothing but a victory in disguise as her party won a mammoth 213 seats in the 292-member strong state Assembly, dealing a huge blow and a humiliating drubbing to the BJP that had set the ambitious target of 200-plus seats for themselves ahead of the polls. The saffron brigade won a paltry 77.However, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday claimed that Mamata should not become the Chief Minister of West Bengal on ethical grounds as she lost from the Nandigram seat. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari was pitted against the West Bengal CM.Despite Banerjee losing the seat to Adhikari, once her close aide, the TMC registered a landslide victory, and that is what has left the BJP red-faced.“Many people have become Chief Minister without contesting the elections, but Mamata Banerjee contested and lost the election from Nandigram. People did not elect her and on this ground, ethically, she should keep herself away from the Chief Ministerial position. Now Mamata Banerjee is claiming there was a conspiracy against her. If defeat is a conspiracy, then there is a conspiracy behind victory in the election,” Deb said.He further said that though the BJP lost the assembly polls in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, its vote share increased manifold. The Tripura CM made the comments while addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Agartala to protest against the alleged post-poll violence in Bengal.Deb highlighted that post-poll violence across West Bengal after the TMC’s victory led to the death of at least five BJP workers.“Houses of BJP supporters are being attacked by TMC-backed goons. Party offices, houses and shops of BJP supporters are either being vandalised or being gutted in fire,” he claimed.
