Ahmedabad: As the corona cases continue to increase rapidly, many migrant workers and their families in Gujarat have started leaving Surat and Ahmedabad, the two most severely affected cities."There are no formal reports which suggest that a large number of migrants are leaving. However, we have asked district authorities to ensure that workers do not face any trouble," state Additional Chief Secretary, Labour and Employment, Vipul Mittra told PTI.These migrant workers come majorly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Travelling in such a scenario will increase the chances of the virus spreading even more rapidly. Since there is no restriction in moving out of the state, these workers are travelling by busses and trains to go back home."The Gujarat High Court recently suggested that a lockdown should be imposed. This has created panic among the migrant workers, who suffered a lot last year due to the sudden lockdown and travel restrictions," said Yogesh Mishra, member of the Zonal Rail Users Consultative Committee as per PTI.During the countrywide lockdown in March 2020 for migrant labourers suffered from unemployment and struggled to score even two meals a day. This trauma has shaken them deep inside."People from Saurashtra are not leaving. It's the migrants from other states who are leaving Surat city due to panic. They suffered a lot last year due to the lockdown and unavailability of transport. Many were forced to walk to their native places last year," Surat Luxury Bus Operators Association president Dinesh Andhan said as per PTI. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has denied rumours of a lockdown in the state.
