'MS Dhoni saw the streak in me'-Ashwin recalls the continuous support from CSK skipper
Just after Super Over he bowled in the 2010 Champions League T20 the off-spinner recounted the words of MS Dhoni.
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has recently opened up on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni 's impact on his cricket. He said the wicket-keeper, who has captained him for both CSK and India, has always helped him in experimenting with his bowling.
Ashwin touched upon his splendid international career and the influence of MS Dhoni on his bowling in an exclusive interview with Indranil Basu on Sportskeeda Cricket's Facebook page.
Asked about something which really left a mark on him, Ashwin chose the constant encouragement of MS Dhoni.
This is a story that many people may not be associating with MS Dhoni but I would like to bring this to the surface. Most times when people ask MS Dhoni how he does it, he speaks about procedure and he doesn't reveal many of his secrets. Yet the one person who inspired me to try new things day-in-day is MS Dhoni, "Ashwin said.
Early on he saw the spirit in me, both for CSK and for India. Critics still suggest I do too hard and do too much experimenting. I've always been challenging myself and MS Dhoni has always told me that my greatest strength is that I can bowl something. He said I'm bloody good at what I do, at the end of the day, "he said.
Ashwin further talked in the 2010 Champions League T20 about his experiences playing for CSK.
In a match that went to a Super Over against the Victoria Bushrangers, the spinner asked his captain to bowl it, only to concede 23 runs to Aaron Finch and David Hussey.
"I was the Champions League 's Series Player in 2010. I bowled a Super Over and after volunteering to bowl, I pummeled under pressure. David Hussey hit me for about 20 runs and I was overwhelmed after the game, totally lost because I let my captain down," Ashwin said.
The Tamil Nadu bowler went on to say that even in a high-pressure situation like a Super Over, MS Dhoni backed him in bowling the variations. He (MS Dhoni) said, 'You should have bowled the ball in the carrom, where was it going? This is the greatest asset you have. It does not matter whoever says something.
If you bowl your best and things don't work out, you can't do anything.'When he says 'stick to the cycle,' there's sound logic behind it and without it, MS Dhoni wouldn't have accomplished what he's done."
Ashwin also said MS Dhoni always gave him the freedom to set up his own area at CSK, even during his formative years.
