Google reveals that users of Google Pay contributed to the PM Cares Fund through Rs 124 Crore.
Google Monday announced the total donation of more than 2 million transactions to the PM Cares Fund through Google Pay app stands on a whopping Rs 124 crore. At the Google for India 2020 event, held online for the first time in the past six years, Google India country leader and vice president, Sanjay Gupta said people from different strata came forward to make their contributions to the PM Modi-led government's relief fund to tackle the covid-19 pandemic. The Google Pay app is one of the platforms that enable the PM Cares Fund to make digital transactions.
The net amount of donations made to the PM Cares Fund via the Google Pay app so far is Rs 1,24,84,92,307. The amount of transactions to the relief fund which made the huge sum of money was 22,44,905. Google Pay uses the Centralized Payments System payment infrastructure, also known as UPI, to allow transfers of money to bank accounts. Formerly known as Google Tez, Google Pay is one of the leading UPI-based applications in the country in 2019, driving about 80-90 percent of UPI transactions, clocking up between 221-225 million.
The digital-only event saw Sundar Pichai, the Alphabet and Google CEO, advocate about the company's contributions to India's digital economy, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected. Pichai had a word about cybersecurity and data security with Modi which is at the helm of the Digital India initiative. Ravi Shankar Prasad, India's IT minister, joined Pichai to discuss the most recent announcement. Google will spend $10bn in India over a five-year period in various industries.
Last year, Google piloted many features for the Indian consumers, such as Google Assistant on the phone line and more accurate alerts for changes in weather, including flood alerts. The Google ecosystem for India has inclusively provided products to masses, including Android. According to Google, India is the second-largest Android manufacturing country in the world and about 2 billion Android devices are active in India at a given time.
